Key Projects
Christmas Island Immigration Processing and Reception Centre
Description
The Christmas Island IRPC is a 800 Bed detention centre for the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs and is located on Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean. This project was undertaken by Baulderstone Hornibrook Constructions. The architect is Phillips Smith Conwell.
The construction is primarily light weight steel framed construction.
Scope
Steelfinne was contracted to supply and install the secure door and window package which included all security doors, frames and locking systems; all security windows.
Project Challenges
Major challenges for this project were the remoteness of the site and complexity of the construction methodology stemming from the integration of high security components into a steel framed structure. The application of hot dip galvanized finishes became of particular issue due to incompatibility with the documented window design leading to major heat stress related distortion and poor quality finish. These issues were addressed through a process of comprehensive redesign and the implementation of specific quality procedures to ensure design intent was met while providing a quality corrosion protection and finish.
In order to meet project program requirements, particular attention was paid to resourcing and scheduling of both the design and manufacture of components. As typical shipping lead times to site are 8-10 weeks, particular attention was required to ensure all components, tools and resources were dispatched to meet program requirements.
Through the delivery of this project Steelfinne has developed the purpose written software system ‘Job Track’. This software allows Steelfinne to better control the scheduling, approval status, production scheduling, manufacturing status and QA of fabricated and purchased components. This is of particularly benefit for complex projects with critical path time constraints.
