Key Projects
Maryborough Correctional Centre – Queensland
Description
The Maryborough Correctional Centre is a 500 bed minimum and maximum security facility located on a green field site near Maryborough in Queensland. This project was undertaken by Walter Construction. The architect was the Queensland Project Services.
In accordance with Queensland Corrective Services standards the construction is primarily Cavity blockwork.
Scope
Steelfinne was contracted to supply and install the secure door and window package which included all security doors, frames and locking systems; all security windows including K700 security bars.
Project Challenges
As the first major project in Queensland since the re-examination of security bar requirements and issue of performance based requirements by Corrective Services, Steelfinne undertook extensive testing and development of welding processes and techniques for K700 Austenitic Manganese Steel security bars. This included both the prescribed tests as required by the specification and additional testing to ensure the long term performance of the material in term of security and corrosion protection.
The testing carried out during this period has resulted in the development of processes, standards and procurement specification which have been adopted as a minimum requirement by the respective Corrective Services Authorities in New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania.
