Risdon Correctional Centre – Tasmania

Description

The Risdon Correctional Centre is a 150 Bed Mens, Womens minimum and high security prison and Mental Health facility located on an existing prison site and included refurbishment to existing prison facilities. This project was undertaken by John Holland Construction. The architect was Phillips Smith Conwell.

The construction was primarily precast concrete panels.

Scope

Steelfinne was contracted to supply and install the secure door and window package which included all security doors, frames and locking systems; all security windows including K700 security bars.

Project Challenges

As the only major correctional facility in Tasmania and the first expansion in decades, this project was of a high profile. This project posed the design and manufacturing issues of a Boutique prison. As a small facility catering to all levels of security and operational requirements, all of the elements required of a major facility were present but with little repetition. This placed a very high demand on design and drafting resources to generate workshop drawings within the reduced project timeframes.

The external cladding system to the cell blocks also posed several challenges through the use of an innovative composite precast and light weight colourbond cladding system. Steelfinne was appointed to develop the cast in support structure for the light weight cladding which was required to integrate seamlessly with the external windows, mechanical and hydraulic services.
